BMW 5 Series: Rear collision preparation
Concept
The system reacts to vehicles approaching from
behind.
General information

Two radar sensors in the rear bumper monitor
the area behind the vehicle.
When a vehicle approaches from the rear at a
certain speed, the system responds as follows:
- Active Protection: when a
collision seems to be unavoidable, PreCrash
functions are triggered.
Safety information
Warning
The system cannot serve as a substitute for the
driver's personal judgment in assessing visibility
and traffic situation. There is a risk of accident.
Adjust driving style to traffic conditions. Watch
traffic closely and actively intervene where appropriate.
Warning
Indicators and warnings cannot serve as a substitute
for the driver's personal judgment. Due
to its limits, the system may not issue warnings
or reactions, or these may be issued late or in a
manner that is not consistent with their normal
use. There is a risk of accident. Adjust driving
style to traffic conditions. Watch traffic closely
and actively intervene where appropriate.

Radar sensors

The radar sensors are located in the rear
bumper.
Always keep the bumper in the area of the radar
sensors clean and unobstructed.
Switching on/off
The system is automatically active after every
driving off.
The system is deactivated in the following situations:
System limits
The system may not be fully functional in the following
situations:
- When a vehicle is approaching at a speed
much faster than your own.
- When the approaching vehicle approaches
slowly.
- In heavy fog, wet conditions, or snowfall.
- In tight curves or on narrow lanes.
- If the bumper is dirty, iced up, or covered,
for instance by stickers.
- If the field of view of the sensors is covered,
e.g., by garage walls, hedges or snow hills.
- If cargo protrudes.
